People come to see my work and there’s a sense that they’re decoding it. It’s a visual code but also a written code. One of the most fundamental traits that we have is that desire to decode things, to understand the mystery of it.

The Lapis Press is fortunate to have collaborated with Alexandra Grant on several projects, in a wide variety of mediums. Following on their acclaimed first joint effort, a book entitled Ode to Happiness, Alexandra Grant has reunited with actor and writer Keanu Reeves to create a new body of work called Shadows. Soon to be published by Steidl Press, the book Shadows explores the real and symbolic nature of the shadow as image and figure of speech. Grant's photographs capture Reeves's shadow at times as a silhouette portrait and at others as traces of light as he and the camera move together. In transforming the images into color and reversing light for dark, Grant has made the shadows themselves the source of light. A celebrated colorist, Grant brings her painter's palette and sensibility to the digital photography process.
