Richard Long Great Britain, b. 1945

My art is the essence of my experience, not a representation of it.

- Richard Long

Dust Dobros Desert Flowers is an artist book with 7 etching-aquatints by Richard Long and published by The Lapis Press in 1987. The etchings were made from ink mixed with ground up mud from Death Valley. The volume has two textual pages, Death Valley Dust and Desert Flowers, inspired by Long’s walks in Death Valley and Joshua Tree, California. The work also includes a sound disc, A Round of Desert Flowers by Long with Simon Childs playing the dobro.

Although best known for site specific work and sculpture, Richard Long's collaborations with The Lapis Press are pure examples of the artist's practice and genius.  From the action of a walk to the temporary placement of stones along the way, from piles of stones placed on the gallery floor to mud smeared upon the walls with his hands, Richard Long helped redefine sculpture in the 1970s.

For Long, the landscape is at once the medium and subject of his work. He travels to challenging and remote terrains, documenting long walks with text and photographs, while leaving piles of rocks and other ephemeral installations behind him. Long’s projects exist as installations, but also as memory and narrative in our imaginations.
