The Lapis Press is pleased to announce the debut of Los Angeles-based artist Alexandra Grant's new photographic works made in collaboration with Keanu Reeves, Shadows.
Following on their acclaimed first joint effort, a book entitled Ode to Happiness, Alexandra Grant has reunited with actor and writer Keanu Reeves to create a new body of work called Shadows. Soon to be published by Steidl Press, the book Shadows explores the real and symbolic nature of the shadow as image and figure of speech. Grant's photographs capture Reeves's shadow at times as a silhouette portrait and at others as traces of light as he and the camera move together. In transforming the images into color and reversing light for dark, Grant has made the shadows themselves the source of light. A celebrated colorist, Grant brings her painter's palette and sensibility to the digital photography process.
These first ten Shadows prints are a selection from over 140 photographic works, and will be available in a limited edition of 3.
In the book Shadows, soon to be published by Steidl Verlag, Grant's Shadows photographs will be accompanied by texts written by Reeves that give voice to the multiple manifestations of the shadow: as a projected figure, a place of concealed emotion, and an invocation to shadow play.
Alexandra Grant has a long history of working with Lapis Press. Her first prints, Fragments 6 and 7 were a benefit for MOCA in 2006. The project Wallpaper (la escalera al cielo), 2008 was exhibited at MOCA as part of Focus Series: Alexandra Grant at MOCA and as part of "Double-Take: The Poetics of Illusion and Light" at the Baltimore Contemporary. Two neon editions -- ¿dónde está la escalera al cielo?, 2007 and I see my self in you, 2013 -- which have been included in multiple exhibitions and private collections. Shadows is the first series of photographic works published by Alexandra Grant.
